Newborn Sessions - Why & When to Book?
WHY HAVE NEWBORN PHOTOS
As a mum, I know how many other things are on your list of things to buy/do. I also know just how fast they change. Every week something seems new or different.
This is a chance to have a wonderful picture of you all as a new family, that will be treasured by your little ones for decades to come. They’ll love looking back at how you all were just after they were born.
I highly recommend you take a million photographs of your new baby on your phone. However, there is no way that a phone can capture your new babies lush gorgeousness the same way as professional portraits. Babies skin can often take some time to adjust to being outside of the womb. Professional newborn photographers are specialised in removing flakes, spots and jaundice, leaving your baby blemish-free in your final images.
They really do change soooooo much! Every parent I have come to me always comments on how much their baby has changed/grown in the two weeks between having their portraits taken and seeing their gallery. They become so much more alert and less curled in their womb-like pose. I love looking back at newborn photographs of my daughter, that time was so incredibly special and memorable. I'm forever surprised by just how tiny she once was.
I offer shorter sessions with just 10 images - which also include family portraits. This makes a newborn photography session so much more affordable than traditional sessions.
WHEN TO BOOK
Because newborn sessions take place so early on in your baby’s life, I recommend booking them well before your baby arrives. Not only because you risk not being able to secure a spot in your chosen photographer’s diary if you don’t. But also because once your baby arrives the weeks will fly by before you realise it. If you don't want to miss the opportunity to have sleepy posed images then get in early and tick one of those to-dos off your baby list.
I advise expectant parents to book their shoot just after their 20-week scan. This allows plenty of time to secure a spot in your chosen photographer’s diary.
With an older baby session, you have much more time to get organised, however, if you would like the sleepy curled up and posed style of photographs then I would recommend booking early to secure a session at an age you’d prefer. If you’re wondering how you can book before knowing the date your baby will arrive then please read on…
How can I book if I don’t know exactly when my baby will be born?
One of the most common questions from potential clients is "what happens if our baby arrives early or late? If capturing babies whilst they're so new is so important, but we don’t know exactly when our baby will arrive, how can we know when to schedule the shoot?"
When you book a newborn session with me we won’t actually schedule a session date. I will set a provisional date in the diary and amend it once baby arrives. Babies often arrive up to two weeks early or late so I am always flexible with your session date. To ensure I can always accommodate your newborn photography bookings I only ever pre-book 4-5 newborn sessions per month. So be sure to book early to avoid disappointment. All I ask is that you contact me as soon as you can after your baby arrives so that we can confirm a date for the session.
The sooner you can get in touch after the birth of your baby the more options I can offer you for your session date.
My Baby Has Already Been Born. Have I Left It Too Late To Book?
If your gorgeous little baby has already arrived please do get in touch as I often have last-minute availability due to early and late arrivals. I also photograph babies from every age between newborn and first birthday!
OLDER BABY & 1ST BIRTHDAY SESSIONS – These sessions are much shorter and are therefore available within 1-3 weeks of you enquiring. Older baby sessions are typically only 30-45mins long and birthday sessions 45-60mins.
Hopefully, this has helped clear up some of the mystery behind booking a baby in for a newborn portrait session. I know many parents-to-be haven’t been through the process of having a newborn photo shoot so I’ve created a Frequently Asked Questions page to help answer some very common questions.
